Letters, 1860-1863.

Letters written by Freese to Melissa A. Grant from May 10, 1862 through May 19, 1863, describing his daily life as a soldier during the Civil War. The first letters were written from Camp Keyes, Augusta, Maine, followed by a few from a camp at Alexandria, Virginia. Most of the subsequent letters were written from a convalescent camp near Fort Barnard near Alexandria, Va. The last letters were written aboard the "DeWitt Clinton" near Key West, Florida, and from Simsport, La., near the Red River. The collection also contains one letter written by Freese to Melissa Grant in 1860 and another written in 1862 to Grant from her brother, Lorenzo Grant, from Baton Rouge, La. Lorenzo Grant also served in the 22nd Regiment, Company A.

William W. Freese was born on Nov. 5, 1841, the son of Jeremiah and Matilda Freese of Argyle, Maine. During the Civil War, he was a member of Company A of the 22nd Maine Infantry Regiment. He married Melissa A. Grant on July 31, 1863. The 22nd Regiment, organized in Bangor, Maine, was mustered in on Oct. 18, 1862 and mustered out on Aug. 14, 1863. It moved from Maine to Virginia to Louisiana and saw engagements at Franklin and Port Hudson, Louisiana in 1863. From the description of L...
